If you are looking for heaven on earth, you will find it at the wonderful hotel called Sandy Lane in Barbados. Bill and I were guests of Sandy Lane and attended the Gold Cup races at the historic Garrison Savannah racecourse in Bridgetown on March 6th.
There is a genuine love of horse racing there and their big day was full of enthusiasm, pagentry and some very competitive races run by horses entirely free of all medication. Mr. Eugene Melnyk's Sterwins prevailed in neck victory over a very game Bribon. Sterwin came from far back and launched a long, determined bid from the head of the stretch. Patrick Husbands, a local hero who rides in Canada, won this Grade I in a hand ride after losing his whip as they straightened away coming off the final turn.
We watched the races from the boxes of Sir David Seale, President of the Barados Turf Club and Lord Michael Taylor who is a member of the board of directors. They were gracious hosts and excellent horsemen.
Lord Taylor and Sir Seale were represented by their own very game colts, Apostle and John Brian, who finished third and fourth, respectively. Apostle and John Brian started from the twelth and thirteenth post position on this difficult course.
Bill and Slew were honored with an introduction and display of the Triple Crown trophy. The local fans and members of the Turf Club were generous with their respect for this great feat.
The four days spent at Sandy Lane resort was an experience we will never forget. Sandy Lane is a place where kindness and graciousness are practiced in a truly breathtaking setting.
Thank you, Barbados, for this wonderful visit to your country.
